Five Questions: Makeup and Skincare

I have referenced Grechen’s Closet multiple times on my blog, on Instagram, on Facebook…… she’s a blogging LEGEND, y’all. I love her style, her unending search for more meaning through style, and her dedication to sustainable fashion. Every so often she has awesome stuff on her blog that inspires me to post. Recently, she did five questions on makeup and skincare, and I couldn’t pass them up! So here are my answers.

Most recent full-face pic. Obviously, I love the makeup!

Why do you (or don’t you) wear makeup?

It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with makeup, especially lip colors. When I was young,  I wore it because I was finally allowed to. I wore some ridiculous stuff on my face simply because my mom finally gave me permission. In middle school and high school, I didn’t give much thought to colors (my foundation was way too light!) or what was best for me; I just wanted to wear what everyone else wore. In my mid-twenties, I went through a phase of not wearing much makeup at all. But now, I absolutely love it. To me, it’s an art form. It’s a way to express myself and my feelings without having to say a word. It’s an excellent expression of self-care; taking the time to create my face, using all my favorite products and colors, gives me a sense of self-love and happiness. I love every minute of it!

When do you wear makeup? Do you put it on everyday, no matter if you’re just going to be at home or going to the grocery store, just for yourself? Or do you save it for special occasions?

I sort of have levels. If I’m not going anywhere that day (just working at home, cooking, staying in, etc) I generally just wear sunscreen and moisturizer. If I’m going to run a few errands, I’ll also wear primer, powder, blush, a light lip color, and some clear brow gel. If I’m doing THINGS (client meetings, dinner out, etc), I go all out. Full foundation, contour, highlight, blush, eyeliner, etc.

What are your 2-3 can’t-do-without skincare/makeup items?

Makeup and Skincare - Favorite Products

OMG how am I supposed to keep it to 2-3? First and foremost, my Elta MD sunscreen. It’s a good price, great coverage and protection, and doesn’t mess with my moisturizer, primer, or foundation. Some sunscreen can be super drying and flaky, but this one sinks in and disappears in the best way possible. Next, my Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer. I try not to spend too much money on makeup; I’m fickle and I like trying new things, so I don’t want to waste money. But a really good primer will make any foundation look a million times better. It’s pricey, but it’s worth it. My drugstore foundations look smooth and perfect, and even wearing it alone makes my dry, reptilian skin look flawless. It’s well worth the cost, and I never let myself run out.  Last, my ColourPop Lippie Stix. Don’t make me choose a color; I love them all equally. But they come in a million shades, look amazing, and they are $5 a piece. What’s not to love?

How have you changed your routine over the years? or haven’t you?

Makeup and Skincare - Routine Products

Well, the biggest change is that I have a routine! I wash my face everyday with regular CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, and use First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair moisturizer in the morning. At night is when things get fun. I clean my face with Garnier Micellar Water, then use Pixi by Petra’s Glow Tonic, next I use a night moisturizer (trying CeraVe’s right now), and then a coffee bean eye cream from 100% Pure. Last, I use a lip scrub to exfoliate my lips (I do this every other night), and put on rose balm Vaseline on my lips. I’m still trying to find the perfect products for night time, and will probably go back to the La Fresh Good Night, Night Cream.

Do you do your own nails? Or have manicures? What products do you use if you do them at home?

I am the worst nail biter in the world. It makes me so sad, because I love a fabulous manicure! If/when I do decide I want nails, I generally go get a set of acrylics from a little place by my house. Sometimes I keep them up for a few months, then try and get my natural nails manicured, but end up biting them off again. It’s a vicious cycle!
